The University of Nicosia is currently running a UNic International Summer School where high-school students can mingle with other students of their own age from around the world and have fun while learning.
The summer school runs in sessions, and the next one coming up will begin on July 25 and last until August 5. During these two weeks, participants will be using English as a common language to communicate with students from other parts of the world, therefore giving them the perfect chance to practice what they know.
Founded in 2014, the summer school follows the University of Nicosia’s philosophy of experience-based learning, enhancing the learning process with various excursions and workshops, and therefore providing students with an unforgettable educational experience.
Apart from their academic activities, all students will have the chance to get to know our island a little better by taking part in cultural activities and workshops, and also going on various excursions. Continuing on the theme of tradition and culture, students will make their own traditional Cypriot pottery souvenirs, such as pots, vases and bowls, and prepare Cypriot delicacies while being part of a hands-on workshop to do with cooking traditional Cypriot dishes. Some of the country’s finest chefs will be their teachers, so they will truly be learning from the best.
Science and communication will also be part of the package with trips to the Life and Health Sciences Department Labs where students will be able to experience a fun, interesting and educational workshop all to do with science. They will also learn new ways to explore technology and use it for communication purposes, getting insights into how films are made and how radio programmes are produced.
While learning about the island, cooking and science, students will also have the chance to enrich their English language vocabulary. They can do this by choosing from a number of English courses, including general English, IELTS preparation, English for tourism, English for academic purposes and English for business.
This year the summer school will also offer the Discovering Engineering course which aims to introduce participants to the world of Engineering and give them the opportunity to work on the design and application of projects, such as a small robot, radio, automatic control systems, and photovoltaic systems.
All the language courses will take place in Larnaca and the Discovering Engineering course will be held in Nicosia.
The cost for the summer school is €800, including accommodation in a three-star hotel. If a stay at a hotel is not needed, then this amount is deductible. Applications for the summer school can be completed at http://iss.unic.ac.cy/apply-now/
