Melios Zoo and Pet Centre in Ayioi Trimithias, just outside Nicosia, has been making use of a legal loophole for some time now, using its status as a pet shop to import dangerous and exotic animals like lions and tigers, ostensibly as pets.

On July 9th, a group of protesters – including Kyriakos Kyriakou of the Animal Party – gathered outside the site, alleging that animals are being abused and living in unacceptable conditions, but also calling on the government to change the law. We spoke to some of the protesters, and also contacted owner Melios Menelaou for his side of the story.
