Man fined for attempting to smuggle cigarettes

A Greek Cypriot man from Larnaca district was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the possession of 36 cartons of duty free cigarettes bought in the mixed village of Pyla.

According to the customs department the man admitted to purchasing the cigarettes from the village, known as a centre of smuggling activity, which straddles both the buffer zone and the boundary of the British base of Dhekelia.

Following a search of the man’s house, the goods which would normally have carried a €1275 tax bill were seized by customs as was his car, in which he said he transported them.

The man and his car were freed after he reaching an out of court settlement with the authorities, paying them a fine of €1800 for the smuggling offence and €500 to have his vehicle released, with Customs keeping the cigarettes.
