Three Cypriot athletes compete during Rio’s first day

Pavlos Kontides leads the Cyprus Olympic team at the opening ceremony of the Rio games

Three Cypriot athletes will compete during the first day of the 31st modern Olympic Games in Rio, in swimming and gymnastics.
The opening ceremony of the Olympics took place at the Maracana Stadium with the Cypriot team being the 46th team to enter the stadium among 207 delegations. The Cypriot flag was held by silver medalist from the London Olympic Games, sailing athlete Pavlos Kontides.
On Saturday, 18-year-old Sotiria Neofytou will compete in the women`s 100m butterfly, while 22-year-old Iacovos Hadjiconstantinou will compete in the men’s 400m freestyle.
Later on, 18-year-old Marios Georgiou will compete in the gymnastics men`s individual all-around section.
Meanwhile, the Cypriot team lost a weightlifting athlete, 24-year-old Antonis Martasides, who failed to pass a substance test and will return home.
Fifteen Cypriot athletes, six of them women will participate in the Games, in track and field, sailing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming and cycling.
