A wedding without the groom

A wedding ceremony in the north went ahead without the groom on Saturday because the travel ban imposed in Turkey following the July 15 coup attempt meant the husband-to-be could not attend.

According to Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris, the groom is doing his military service in Turkey and that was the reason he could not attend his own wedding in Yialousa.

The bride, Kibris said, and her father, along with the groom’s parents, were there to greet the well-wishers. The paper said this was the first time such a ceremony has taken place in the north.

The groom will be present at the second ceremony, which will take place in Turkey on August 14.
