Larnaca district court jailed 30-year-old George Haritou from Polemidia, Limassol for 12 months after finding him guilty of possession of 135 grammes of cannabis with intent to supply.

Haritou admitted to picking up the drug in the mixed village of Pyla with the intention to take it to Limassol saying he had been paid €100 for the task. His lawyer, Yiannis Polychronis said Haritou had been using cannabis since he was 19 when foreign women had been a bad influence on him. He used to run a snack bar in Polemidia and when it shut making him unemployed, he resorted to transporting drugs to get his fix.

He said Haritou had served heavy jail sentences in the past for similar crimes and was released on presidential pardon.

In passing sentence judge Evi Antoniou said the charges faced by Haritou were serious as the supplying of drugs was a plague on society, that the sentence should serve as a deterrent and that in his case a suspended sentence was not suitable.
