The Kypria International Festival will be going all out as of September with theatre productions, musical, dance and opera performances, and a few shows for children. But it is not all about sitting back and being entertained, this year one of the many performers to take part in the festival will also give dancers and choreographers on the island the chance to expand their dancing knowledge.
Renown and awarded dancer Eldad ben Sasson will give a three-day dance workshop entitled Memory In.Formation at the Dancehouse Lekfosia from September 5.
Sasson, who has worked with the Batsheva Dance Company, collaborated with many great choreographers, such as Mats Ek, Sharon Eyal, Alexandra Waierstall, Paul Norton and Yoshifumi Inao, will lead an intense class that will focus on the connection between creativity and imagination in the dancer’s work.
Sasson explains that the workshop is based on his experience with Ohad Naharin’s method and many other ideas and concepts he gained from his studies, from his personal life, his career path and some of the philosophies he believes in.
He goes on to explain that participants will work with analytical thought and physical feelings in different situations, as experienced by the body.
The aim is to enrich and improve the intuitive experience of the dancer, using the body’s memory in creating a movement that leaves new traces of memories in space, and practicing how to identify them and how to relate to them.
Sasson asks dancers if they are up to the challenge by stating that “during the class I speak constantly. Structured exercises, clear instructions for improvisation, and stamina exercises for strengthening.
“The class has no official break. The challenge of the class is to be in a constant state of body and mind connection. In the moments of tiredness, we understand it is a quality that we can connect to and enjoy, being available for multi-tasking challenges.”
Sasson is invited to give workshops in schools, academies and companies in Israel and around the world. He has been working as a choreographer since 2000, and he travels and performs around the world with his works and as a guest performer in different projects.
The cost for the workshop, which is made possible with the support of the Embassy of Israel in Nicosia, is €30 but a deposit of €20 is required before August 31. If you are interested send an email to [email protected] or call 22 780960 or 70005035 to secure your place.
After the workshop, the dancer will be performing in the piece A City Seeking its Bodies, choreographed by Alexandra Waierstall, on September 9 and 10 at the THOC building in Nicosia. So if you are not a dancer, but want to see the dancer in action, this performance which moves along a thin line between fiction and reality, is a great chance to see how Sasson, and other dancers, can take us on a road to an alternative reality.
