Cyprus offers rescue help to Italy

Cyprus has expressed readiness to assist rescue operations in earthquake-hit Italy with a specialised disaster response unit, Civil Defence and medical services personnel.

Italy has thanked Nicosia for the offer, but said it was handling the situation with own resources at the moment.

The government offer was conveyed by the minister of justice and acting minister of the Interior, Ionas Nicolaou, to the ambassador of Italy in Cyprus and to the ambassador of Cyprus in Italy.

The ambassadors have communicated the offer to the Italian authorities, which maintain open channels of communication with Nicosia, in case the assistance is required in the future.

The 6.2 magnitude earthquake has hit central Italy in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving at least 38 people dead, while many buildings collapsed, trapping scores of people in the rubble.
