August jobless figure drops 13% to 35,786 0

The number of registered unemployed fell in August to 35,786 or 13 per cent compared to the respective month of 2015 mainly on a drop in jobless in the construction sector, the statistical service said.

In August, the number of unemployed fell to a seasonally adjusted 37,244 which is also 13 per cent below the respective figure of August 2015, Cystat said in a statement on its website.

In August, the number of unemployed in construction dropped by 1,262 in a year while those in manufacturing, trade, hospitality and transport fell by 743, 694, 583 and 523 respectively, Cystat said. The number of jobless in transport and of newcomers in search for a job also fell by 497 and 733 respectively.

While the registered unemployed figures are not accompanied by an unemployment rate, Eurostat reported on Wednesday that the number of jobless in Cyprus as a percentage of the labour force dropped to 11.6 per cent in July from 11.8 per cent the month before.
