Number of state employees rises 6.4% in Q2, Cystat says

The number of workers in the wider public sector rose in April to June by 417 in a year or 6.4 per cent to 64,734, which is the highest since the fourth quarter of 2014, the statistical service said.

The increase was mainly on a rise in the number of workers employed by the central government in the second quarter by 576 compared to the respective period of 2015, including 380 more workers employed at government sponsored not-for-profit organisations, to 54,669 and 6,010 respectively, Cystat said in a statement on its website on Tuesday. Non-profit organisations include universities, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, state broadcaster CyBC and others.

The number of employees in the local administration rose in the second quarter by 60 to 4,251, Cystat said. Government owned enterprises, such as power producer Electricity Authority of Cyprus, Telecommunications Authority of Cyprus or the Central Bank of Cyprus, reduced their staffers by 219 to 5,814.

The number of workers in the wider public sector was 63,555 in the first quarter.
