Five remanded after attack in nightclub

Larnaca district court on Tuesday remanded five men aged 33, 30, 22, 28 and 46 for six days in connection with an attack Sunday on three men in a nightclub.

Police say they are looking into offences of causing grievous bodily harm, attack causing actual bodily harm, common assault, threats, illegal entry and related conspiracy charges.

On September 24 police received information that on the night of the same day, persons known to them were preparing to carry out illegal acts with the purpose of settling personal differences that arose between them.

Police received a call at around 6am on Sunday from an employee of a Larnaca nightclub saying that the 33-year-old, along with two others, had entered the club and attacked the owner and two employees.

Investigators went to the scene where they found the owner with an injury to his eye, with another employee and two waitresses.

The injured were taken to A&E where the owner was treated for injuries to his nose, bruising on his forehead and damage to his left arm.

The employee suffered a broken nose and other injuries for which he was sent to the orthopedic department of the hospital.

Investigators collected various pieces of evidence including CCTV footage from the premises for further scrutiny.

In a written statement, the nightclub owner said the attack was carried out because the 33-year-old believes the owner incited former friends of his. According to his testimony, just before six in the morning on Sunday, after the club had closed, knocks were heard at the door. When he went to the entrance to see what was going on, four of the suspects attacked him without provocation, hitting him with their hands and punching him and another man.

According to the statement, as the 33-year-old hit the nightclub owner, he verbally threatened his life and that of his family, while at the same time the fifth suspect entered the scene.

Warrants for the arrest of the suspects were issued the same day, while from the CCTV footage of the attack it was ascertained that a little before 6am the five suspects, along with another five, had arrived at the venue, which was shut, in three cars.

It appears from the footage that the 33-year-old kicked the main door of the club and when the owner opened the door, the three others made their way into the lobby and started to beat the owner and another person, while keeping back a third foreign employee by holding him by the neck. At some moment, a fifth man is seen entering the lobby before all the suspects abandoned the scene.

Police told the court that on Monday morning the 28-year-old was apprehended in Livadia, near Larnaca, and on being questioned, verbally admitted to going to the club with three other people but denied carrying out the offences saying he did not take part in the fracas.

On Monday afternoon a 46-year-old from Livadia was also arrested, and on being questioned denied any involvement in the case, putting forward various arguments which according to police, hold no water, with the available CCTV footage.

The three other suspects presented themselves at the offices of the CID in Larnaca with their lawyers in tow and were arrested under warrants already issued against them and on questioning are refusing to answer any of the investigators’ questions.
