The Nicosia municipality is supporting a fund for the sterilisation of stray cats, Nicosia mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis announced on Monday at a press conference held on the occasion of World Animal Day on October 4.
“Local authorities are constantly confronted with issues related to pets, such as abandoned or neglected animals and the presence of strays in the streets and neighbourhoods,” the municipality said, calling on pet owners to be sensitive.
The fund will be launched on Tuesday by Mary Anastasi president of the animal charity, Friends of Animals, and promoted by the municipality who may aid in fundraising events and promote the effort.
The municipality together with the other municipalities of greater Nicosia (Nicosia, Strovolos, Aglantzia, Engomi, Ayior Dhometios and Lakatamia) operates a temporary shelter for dogs in Paliometocho where all stray dogs found in these municipalities are taken.
In order to find responsible owners for these dogs the municipalities have formed partnerships with non-profit and animal welfare organisations who promote the electronic application ‘11pets adopt’ which can be found on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/11petsAdoptCy/.
As in previous years, a ‘Pet and Family Fun Day’ is being organised in the Nicosia municipal gardens by the volunteer network ‘Lefkosiazo’, on Sunday October 9 in support of World Animal Day.
Environmental and animal welfare organisations on Monday renewed their calls to the state to fulfil promises to formulate policies to help the plight of animals.
“Thousands of pets live in appalling conditions, chained or trapped in cages without being able to move,” the Green Party said, repeating their demands for the creation of an animal police unit and stricter penalties for abusers.
