A fire that broke out in the early hours of Thursday morning at the Nicosia premises of the Lions Club was put under control before spreading to neighbouring buildings.
“We were called at 5.35am and responded with five vehicles. At 5.37am, we were there,” fire department spokesman Andreas Kettis said, explaining that firefighters had concentrated their efforts on not allowing the blaze in Lefkonis street to extend to adjacent buildings.
“The blaze was in the closed interior garden at the back, and the restaurant. I think we succeeded as there was very limited damage to the building next door.”
Kettis said the damage was substantial but they had managed to stop it from spreading to the whole building. The fire was under control by 7am.
“Preliminary investigations into the cause of the fire are due to begin as soon as the fire is completely extinguished,” he added. The possibility of the blaze having been started maliciously has not been ruled out.
