Twelve asylum seekers injured in fight

Twelve people were slightly injured on Thursday evening in an incident between two asylum seeking families hosted at the Kofinou reception centre.

Police say that at around 9pm a quarrel broke out between a seven-member family from Iraq and another with five described as Palestinians, the cause believed to be the bullying of a girl by another, with the pair attending the same school.

The Palestinian family are said to have gone to the Iraqi one demanding explanations which resulted in the fracas as the brother of the Iraqi girl appears to have attacked three Palestinians, the student, her mother and a friend.

Things apparently then got out of hand as members of both clans, as well as their friends got involved in the brawl.

The situation was only brought under control after the intervention of Kofinou police, but not before 12 people were injured.

Four of the wounded were taken for to A&E in Nicosia general hospital while seven went to Larnaca for first aid where all were treated and released.

Kofinou police are investigating the incident.
