A 24-year-old Greek man suffered spinal injuries after trying to dive into the water at Cape Greco, Famagusta, on Sunday afternoon, a police report said.

According to the report, the 24-year-old tourist, who is staying at a Larnaca hotel, visited the popular tourist site Spilies at Cavo Greco, to dive into the sea from one of the cliffs.

However, police said, once the man dove into the sea he felt his spine go numb. Seeing he was in difficulty, his friends jumped in the water and brought him out of the water.

Because the area was inaccessible, the men notified the port police and the fire service.

After coordinated efforts by the two departments, in cooperation with members of the Ayia Napa police station, the man was taken to the Famagusta general.

Tests showed a spinal fracture, and the man will remain in hospital for monitoring.

The case is being investigated by the Paralimni police station.
