Woman attacked with acid in critical condition

A Romanian national was remanded for eight days in Nicosia in connection with an acid attack on his ex in the early hours of the morning, which has left her fighting for her life.

The woman is being tended to in a critical condition the intensive care unit of Nicosia hospital after undergoing surgery  following the incident which police are treating as an attempted murder.

The Romanian couple, who broke up a while ago, had an argument in the Lakatamia residence of the 53-year-old woman during which the 44-year-old man threw acid all over her body, resulting in multiple burns.

The woman’s cried brought her son rushing to the scene who in his attempt to help his mother also suffered burns to his hands.

Police say they were “called to the incident at around 2.15am and on arrival found the woman with severe burns on her body, and bleeding.”

An ambulance was called to the scene, which took her to Nicosia general hospital, where she was admitted for treatment in the intensive care unit. The state of her health is described as critical.

The 44-year-old was arrested later on a judicial warrant and is expected to appear in court for a remand hearing later Saturday morning.
