Large dog attack kills terrier, injures owner

A small terrier was killed and its owner injured by a large shepherd dog on Sunday afternoon in Tersefanou in the Larnaca district.

At around 5.20pm a resident of the village reported to police that ten minutes earlier a large shepherd had escaped its enclosure at a neighbouring house and attacked his five-year-old female Yorkshire mini terrier.

He took the terrier to a vet in Kiti who found that it had died as a result of the attack.

In an attempt to ward off the attack the owner of the small dog sustained a hand injury and received first aid at Larnaca general hospital before being released.

Members of the Kiti police force went to the scene and after conducting tests found the attacking dog was a large shepherd breed belonging to a resident in a housing complex in the area.

The animal was taken by members of the community council and locked up in their premises pending further investigation.
