Mixing it up

The local band Gav, which came together in April last year, have managed to put their name right up there with other island-grown bands that have a stronger mark on the music scene.

After playing in various venues across the island, this time the five-member band will take over the Exandas music stage in Nicosia on Thursday with their unique sound.

The band is unlike any other as the concept behind the music and the band name is to transform the classic structures of Greek folk popular music to other genres, so that it is closer to ska, surf and reggae music.

This new genre questions the attitude people have towards music played in dodgy bars, which is intended to connect to the audience. The music is often called alternative and is often criticised by music fans and those involved in the music industry.

Turning their attention to those people who do the criticising, the band concentrates on the details which make songs successful, insists on them, and in the end re-approaches them, trying to take advantage of the universality of music.

Live performance by the band. October 20. Exandas Music Stage, 11 Themistokli Petridi Street, Nicosia. 10pm. €5. Tel: 97-770787
