Anastasiades expects to work closely with new UNSG

President Nicos Anastasiades said on Tuesday he expects to work closely with the new UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in achieving a settlement solution.

In his congratulatory message to Guterres after his election as UNSG, Anastasiades pledged his and the government’s full co-operation in the exercise of his duties.

“I wish you every success in fulfilling your noble mission,” the president said.

“I look forward to work closely with you in achieving a peaceful and comprehensive settlement on the long-standing Cyprus problem, based on a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality. A viable, lasting and functional settlement that will safeguard the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots,” the message said.

President Anastasiades said that Guterres’ election marks an era of change at the United Nations. “The landmark selection procedure for the new Secretary General of the Organization, which included public hearings and informal dialogues greatly increased the transparency and inclusiveness of this process”.
