Mass brawl in Famagusta district school

A 16-year-old male was slightly injured on Friday during a fight between pupils from two villages in the Famagusta district.

Police said they had been notified at 7.30am about a fight involving around 30 pupils from Liopetri and Xylophagou who attend the Avgorou Technical School.

One pupil was taken to hospital where he was treated and subsequently released.

Police along with the school’s authorities were trying to determine the cause of the fight.

Headmaster Andreas Sophocleous said classes went ahead as scheduled. According to the headmaster, the brawl appeared to be the result of a fight between two pupils from the two communities that took place on Thursday.

The fracas kicked off early on Friday, just as the boys from one of the villages arrived in their bus. The others, who were already at the school, attacked them as soon as they disembarked.

Sophocleous said efforts were underway with the parents’ association to prevent any problems from arising on Monday.
