Police on Wednesday evening opened two of the three lanes on the Nicosia-Limassol highway near Latsia that were blocked since the afternoon after a truck carrying scrap metal overturned.

According to the Nicosia police traffic chief Yiannakis Charalambous, the accident occurred a little before 4pm when a truck carrying the scrap overturned on the highway near Halepianes and its load scattered all over the road.

Charalambous said that the driver was injured and was taken to Nicosia hospital. His condition did not appear to be critical, he said.

Police had diverted traffic to Limassol through the old Nicosia-Limassol road.

At around 7.20pm, after crews cleared the road and moved the truck to make way, two of three lanes were given back to traffic. The truck remains on the third lane, police said.

Charalambous said it will be moved after midnight, he said, when traffic flow will be less.

Police urge drivers to be careful, patient, and follow the instructions of officers.
