A private school for children with special needs has suspended a member of their managerial staff over an incident that took place earlier in the week.
In a statement on Thursday, the Prosvasis school said it was cooperating with police and social welfare services in a bid to get to the bottom of the incident and to “apportion responsibility.”
A member of the managerial staff has in the meantime been suspended without pay, it added.
On Tuesday, staff at the school accidentally locked a 19-year-old girl inside and went on a trip, apparently not realising the girl was missing until they had reached their destination.
The girl was left alone at the school from 8am to 3pm, when the others returned.
Her mother says she found out about the incident from the girl, and that the school did not bother to call her on the same day to let her know what had happened.
In its statement, the school expressed grief at the incident, adding that this was the first unfortunate occurrence there during its 15 years of operation.
