Couple held for importing cannabis through the mail

A couple have been remanded in custody for five days in Nicosia in connection with the illegal importation and possession with intent to supply of cannabis.

The couple, a 33-year-old woman and her 23-year-old Bulgarian boyfriend, appear to have ordered 92 grammes of the drug online from the Czech Republic.

An envelope containing the substance arrived last Monday but was placed in a different mailbox than that of the intended recipient and as a result it was returned to the postal services.

The postman, who suspected something suspicious was going on, informed the drug squad, who on closer inspection, discovered the envelope contained cannabis.

Drug squad officers arrested the recipient, the woman, who insisted she knew nothing about it. They subsequently arrested her boyfriend who admitted to being the real recipient of the drugs. The man told police he had ordered the cannabis over the internet and even handed over the computer he had used to make the purchase.

Apart from the envelope, police had received information that the two suspects were supplying drugs being brought from abroad.

Police told the court they expected to take some 30 statements from post office officials and users who had bought drugs from the suspects.

Inquiries were also being made to see if the couple had previously brought in drugs using the same method and whether others were involved.
