Three car pile-up in Paphos (updated)

A three-car pile-up in Paphos involving a hire car resulted in the closure of one of the main roads for an hour on Tuesday, police said.

The accident, which is currently under investigation, resulted in four people being injured, but their condition is not life threatening, although one of the drivers sustained serious injuries, acting Paphos police spokesman, Michalis Ioannou said.

The accident took place on the Coral Bay to Kissonerga road.

“A hire car with two passengers – a German couple – decided to turn right, close to the sea in Kissonerga. As they were waiting to turn a car hit them from behind and their car was pushed onto the other side of the road into oncoming traffic. An oncoming car being driven by a Cypriot crashed into the car which hit them,” Ioannou said.

The driver of the car that smashed into the back of the hire car was also foreign but it is not clear if he was a tourist or a resident. He was taken to hospital with two broken legs.

The road was closed for close to an hour as emergency services carried out their work.

Breathalyzer tests found that none of them were under the influence of alcohol. All of them were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
