Police on Thursday were trying to determine the origin of an assault rifle found in an open area in Nicosia the previous day.

Following a tip, members of the force made their way to field in the area of Tseri, at around 10.30am, where they discovered a Kalashnikov assault rifle in a military bag.

It is not yet clear if the weapon is in a usable condition but it has been taken for forensic and ballistic tests to determine whether it had been used in any criminal activity.

The Kalashnikov has been used in a number of crimes on the island in the last decades, including the gang-land style murder earlier this year of businessman Phanos Kalopsidiotis, and three others, which was carried out with a similar weapon.
