Kantou residents protest over waste station

Residents of Kantou in the Limassol district on Thursday closed the road leading from Episkopi to Omodhos to protest against the construction of a refuse transfer station close to their community.

They symbolically closed the main road for a few minutes, requesting the station should be built somewhere else since the planned site is too close to the village and the construction would directly affect their quality of life.

In addition to the environmental impact the villagers are particularly concerned about the stench of the waste.

However, community leader Sophoclis Georgiou commented that the community council’s decision to build it at the planned site was unanimous after the council received written assurances that it would not create problems and has decided on some compensatory measures for the benefit of the community.

He added the council would react if there are problems with the operation of the waste transfer station in the future.
