Papacostas book paints unflattering picture of Christofias

Costas Papacostas at the public hearing into the Mari blast

Former defence minister Costas Papacostas’ autobiography, titled Anemodarmeni Poria (Wuthering Life), was released this week, one year after his death at Nicosia General, where he served a five-year prison term after being found guilty in court for failing to act in connection with the 2011 Mari explosion.

Since his conviction, Papacostas maintained that he had been the scapegoat on whom others’ crimes had been pinned, and the book argues as much, naming one particular individual as truly responsible for the disaster.

Following 56 years in the frontlines of public life, Papacostas chronicles several turning points in the history of the Republic of Cyprus, like the Cypriots’ 1955-59 struggle against the colonists and the 1974 coup, as well as significant personal anecdotes, including the death of his younger daughter and his own key role in the 1993 Chlorakas debacle, where riot squad MMAD – which he founded – tragically ended a hostage situation by storming into the house, resulting in the death of both captor and hostage.

As expected, the book deals in great length with Papacostas’ personal relationship with former President Demetris Christofias, painting a rather unflattering picture of the latter through several critical epithets regarding the man’s character and leadership competence. Despite the two men’s earlier friendship, Papacostas claims Christofias not only hung him out to dry in the aftermath of the Mari incident, but also ungratefully abandoned him altogether throughout his woes.

A full book review will be carried in the Sunday Mail.
