Arson attack on civil defence car in NIcosia

A vehicle belonging to civil defence was set alight on Saturday night in Lakatamia in Nicosia, CNA reported on Sunday.

According to the report, the fire department received a call around 9.30pm that a car was on fire in an open area near the civil defence building.

Three fire engines responded to the blaze and the fire was put out by 10pm

It sustained damage to the tyres, bumper and hood.

Preliminary examinations found evidence that the tyres had been covered with combustable liquid.

In statements to CNA, the deputy commander of civil defence Lucas Hadjimichael condemned the incident and said it was shameful that someone would do such a thing.

He said in recent days there had been similar arson incidents in the same area so it was likely that civil defence was not the target per se.
