Three police officers were injured during skirmishes at the premises of the Apoel football club in Nicosia on Monday night.

After an event to mark the 90th anniversary of the club, at 11.45pm, around 250 people gathered outside the building and started throwing firecrackers and stones and harassed drivers.

Members of the anti-riot squad and the Rapid Response Unit of the police (MMAD) closed off the road and managed to disperse the crowd by 1.30am. During the operation they made five arrests.

Three police officers were slightly injured and taken to hospital where they received first aid and were discharged.

A section of Kennedy avenue, from the Ayia Paraskevi traffic lights to the Apoel club, remained closed on Tuesday morning because of the damage to the traffic lights.

Traffic is diverted via Stasinou road towards Limassol avenue.
