Re-planting a forest

This Saturday join the effort to bring new life to the Solea area during the organised tree-planting event.

After the huge Solea fire in June, more than 18.5km² of forest was destroyed. The Forestry Department predicts that of this area, 70 per cent will regenerate itself, but to ensure that this happens, the department has prepared a restoration plan which involves anti-erosion measures, managing biodiversity and some hard work from closely monitored volunteers.

As part of this effort to bring the massive reforestation programme to light, The Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative in collaboration with the TUI Group, have arranged a tree planting event to take place this Saturday and asks all of us to join as volunteers.

The tree planting event will take place at the Ayios Theodoros valley. The meeting point, at 9.30am, will be the Forest Station of Ayios Theodoros Soleas (at the entrance to the village, next to the main road leading to the village.)

For all those who are interested, there will be organised buses from all cities to take you to the meeting area.

Buses from Nicosia will leave from Aeolos Office at 8am and from the University of Nicosia at 8.30am. From Limassol buses, will leave from the Cyprus University of Technology at 8.15am and from Jumbo parking at 8.45am. From Paphos buses will leave from Neapolis University at 7am, and from Aelos Office at 7.30am, and from Paralimni buses will leave from Aeolos office at 7am.

The trees to be planted will be provided by the Cyprus Forestry Department.

If you are interested in being a volunteer, let the organisers know by sending an email to [email protected] or call 99-800189 or 22-252315 by Thursday.

Refreshments will also be given.
