Fires put out in Nicosia and Limassol districts

The fire service responded to a number of fires which broke out in Nicosia and Limassol district, they said on Thursday.

At around 3.10am fire fighters received reports of a vehicle on fire in outside its owner’s house in Astromeritis. Two fire engines were sent from the rural fire station at Peristerona, bringing the blaze under control by 3.40am.

The car suffered extensive damage from the fire, which was likely to have been an arson attack, with the exact causes are being investigated.

Meanwhile, at about 5.15am the fire department received a call about a fire in the basement storage area of an abandoned hotel on Limassol’s coastal road.

Three vehicles from Ayios Nicholaos fire station responded, bringing the fire under control by 6.05am.

Hotel equipment including beds, mattresses and tables were destroyed by the blaze.

Firemen, who used two respirators and circular saw to gain entry to the area, checked for trapped people. Investigations point to the fire having been deliberately set.

The fire service said it had responded to 41 calls for help from 6am Wednesday till 6am Thursday. These included 30 fires and two hoax calls and nine cases needing specialised assistance.
