Police seize mail-order ecstasy, arrest recipient

Police arrested a man about to take possession of a large amount of ecstasy at a Nicosia post office while a search of his residence yielded more drugs, police said Friday.

“A 22-year-old Nicosia resident was arrested and detained yesterday (Thursday) to facilitate inquiries concerning an ongoing investigation into a case of illegal importation, possession, and possession with intent to supply of drugs,” police said.

“The 22-year-old was detained at a Nicosia post office, where an operation was set up for the controlled delivery of a parcel containing 1,190 ecstasy tablets.”

Police said that in a search of his residence, they discovered 2.2 grammes of cannabis, 1.2 grammes of cannabis resin, a paper wrap containing hash oil, a set of precision scales, three grinders used to crush cannabis with traces of the drug, and 30 grammes of a beige powder which appeared to be MDMA. All the above were taken as evidence as were two mobile phones, a computer, and various documents.

The man was later remanded in custody for seven days by Nicosia court.

Nicosia drug squad are investigating the case.
