Paphos running club impresses at Athens marathon

MORE than thirty runners from a Paphos running club took part in the Athens marathon and 10km race which took place in Greece.

President of ‘Stelios Kyriakides Running Club’, Stavros Kakourides said that twelve club members ran the marathon distance and twenty runners took part in the 10km race.

“This is a very successful Athens running festival and attracted more than 50,000 runners from all over the world. We were really happy to be a part of it,” he said.

He noted that many of the runners from the club were first timers and passed his congratulations on to all of them.

First-time Marathoners that finished the 34th ‘Athens Authentic Marathon’ were: Nicolas Fouartas (3:25:58), Giorgos Kaponas (3:26:38), Andreas Hadjizinoviou (3:32:10), Chrysanthou Andreas (4:19: 35), Charis Minikkidis (4:32:25) and Doros Pafitis (5:35:32).

“He finished second in the M40 age group category with a time of 37:45 and also runner, Tasos Theodosiou, did really well too and clocked up a time of 39:53.”

The running club president said that this year’s Athens Marathon celebrated the completion of 120 years since the first modern organisation of the marathon at the Athens Olympics in 1896.

“All of the runners from our club visited the museum of the Marathon and the famous statue-sculpture of Stelios Kyriakides and Spyros Louis which is situated in Marathon town square.”

Kakourides is also the Race Director of the Cyprus Logicom Marathon, which is now in its 19th year.

The Logicom Cyprus marathon is dedicated to the late Stelios Kyriakides, who was born in Paphos in 1910, participated in two Olympic Games (Berlin 1936, London 1948), and is known for winning the Boston Marathon in 1946.

The Logicom Cyprus Marthon, half- marathon, 10km race and the 5km fund run will take place in Paphos on March 5th, 2017 and there are just a few days left for participants to sign up for entry. (This can be completed on the Logicom Cyprus Marathon website.)

For the first time last year, the historic marathon flame from Athens featured in the Paphos Logicom Marathon

Veteran runner, 64-year-old Yiannakis Tsausis, the oldest member of the Stelios Kyriakides Club had the honour of running the last leg of the flames arrival, delivering it to Paphos harbour, where a ceremony took place to welcome it.
