Explosive device placed at prison warden’s home (updated)

A powerful improvised explosive device blew up at dawn on Monday, at the main entrance of a home in Ayios Pavlos, Nicosia, belonging to a prison officer.

No one was injured in the blast.

According to a police announcement, the force was notified about the incident at 1.30am when officers went directly there.

It is understood that police had information beforehand that the prison officer would be targeted and a protection detail had been stationed in the neighbourhood for around a week.

On Sunday evening however, there were no police officers in the area, the Cyprus Mail has learned.

Initial examinations show that the explosion caused damage to the front door, the extent of which is yet to be fully assessed.

Nicosia CID is continuing investigations.
