Weather causes power cut in Polis and surrounding villages

Severe weather conditions prevailed early Thursday in Paphos district with heavy rainfall, which resulted in a power outage in Polis and the surrounding villages of Steni, Prodromi, Goudi, Chrysochous, Androlykou and Drousia.

Over the last 24 hours, strong winds, torrential rains and hail hit the district leaving serious damage in their wake.

Teams from the electricity authority are in the area to repair the damage to the grid and restore the power supply, which was interrupted at 3.40am

Though the fire service had not been called for assistance since 6pm on Wednesday, it had responded to a number of incidents in the hours before, dealing with flooded premises and damage caused by a tornado that struck Achelia and the livestock farming area of Anarita.

Damage to potato plantations was reported along with felled cypress trees, which the fire service was called to remove. Christodoulos Papaminas of Anarita said his potato harvest had been destroyed while his livestock housing suffered extensive damage.

Strong winds blew away the pens of Theodosis Arestis, a livestock farmer, whose premises host a large number of animals.

The damage caused by the tornado has prompted food and livestock farmers to appeal to the government for financial assistance.
