Elderly man rescued from ditch with hypothermia

An elderly man was rescued from a ditch near Larnaca where he had been stuck for six hours throughout the night, police said on Friday.

The 81-year-old was in imminent danger after slipping into the water channel at around 8pm, police said.

“At about two in the morning, police received information, that in an area near Meneou, in Larnaca district, a person was heard calling softly for help,” police said.

“Members of the force from Kiti police station made their way to the scene and found a person in a two-metre ditch, which contained around a metre of water. The man was found to be an elderly man aged 81, who although conscious, was visibly exhausted and in a state of hypothermia.”

Police said after his rescue the man was transferred by ambulance to Larnaca hospital for treatment.
