Art in the capital

Today, the Loukia & Michael Zampelas Art Museum will present the temporary exhibition First Generation of Cypriot Artists from the Surikov Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow.

The first generation of graduates consists of Andreas Charalambous, Christos Foukaras, Mariam Suhanova-Foukara, Hambis Tsangaris, Andreas Makariou, Kyriakos Tamanas and George Gavriel. Exhibiting their new body of work along with works from their studies (1969-1987), the artists demonstrate their virtuosity which can be traced from their early artistic practice. Based on inspirations common in nature and their devotion to painting, printmaking for Hambis in particular, they established their own features which enhanced the formation of Cypriot art.

The exhibition will be inaugurated at 7pm by the executive director of RCB Bank, Sotos Zakhaios.

The second exhibition to have its start this week is the solo exhibition Forms, Lines and Colours by Despo Friderikou at Gallery Gloria on Friday.

Speaking about the painting and sculpture exhibition and the issues which inspired her to create pieces for the collection, Friderikou said ,“a key element in all my work is movement, or rather the transfusion, of experiences from one piece to another and then the final destination, which may not have its original form.

The ideas, the inspiration that cause the creation of each new work, either they be visual or written words, always concentrates on the history of Cyprus. The unchangeable traits that all of us as Cypriots have within us, finds a way of expression within my work.”
