Prepare for rain, storms and snow

With a low pressure system affecting the region, rain, storms and snow are forecast for much of this week, met officer Panayiotis Mouskos announced on Monday.

Monday got off to a warm, sunny and bright start but by late afternoon, the clouds started building, first in Larnaca and then spreading throughout much of the island. Later in the day it will be mostly cloudy with isolated showers expected, especially in the west and in mountainous areas.

By evening these will develop into isolated thunderstorms with snow in the Troodos region. At night, temperatures will fall to 10C inland, around 12C in coastal areas and 4C in the mountains.

Temperatures will reach 17C on Tuesday, which, according to Mouskos is normal for the season, and the weather will be much the same as the day before. But strong winds will lead to a choppy sea in the afternoon.

Temperatures will drop on Wednesday by about five to six degrees to 10 to 12C in Nicosia during the day. Night time temperature will fall to 1C and in the mountains to -7C.

Temperatures on Thursday will increase slightly and it will be mostly sunny.

On Friday, it will be slightly warmer but the sunny weather will give way to clouds and more isolated showers and snow or sleet in the mountains.
