Festive vibes

Limassol, Paphos and Nicosia, are all in a very festive, musical mood this week.

The Diastasis choir will present a Christmas concert at the Pattichio Municipal Theatre in Limassol on Friday and Saturday under the name Christmas in the Streets.

The vocal ensemble, together with the children’s choir and the dancing group of Diastasis, will take us on a magical trip down Christmas memory lane with lots and lots of Christmas tunes. Each tune will be a brick on the streets of any city in the world during this time of year, as the two performances aim to prove that music is universal.

In Nicosia on Saturday at the Pallas theatre, and in Paphos on Sunday at Technopolis 20 Cultural Centre, musicians from the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) will present chamber music concerts.

Two violinists of the CSO, from the First Violins section – Anna Wrobel and Ayse Karaoglan – meet on stage with pianist Manolis Neophytou to present a contemporary programme with works by Mortiz Moszkowski, Alex Rawsthorne and Igor Frolov.

The German (of Polish descent) composer Moszkowski lived between 1854 and 1925 and strongly resisted the then revolutionary musical trends introduced by Debussy, Scriabin and Schoenberg, something apparent in his Suite for two violins and piano, the harmonies and embellishments of which bring to mind more the music of Chopin than that of the impressionistic, expressionistic or Second Viennese schools.

A particular, individual style can also be found in the works of British composer Rawsthorne (1905-1971) whose Theme and variations for two violins was first heard at the International Contemporary Music Festival in London in 1938 and which instantly placed the composer on the board.

The last composer to be presented in the two concerts is the contemporary Russian composer Frolov (born in 1939). Frolov never studied composition and is known worldwide as a virtuoso violinist
