President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader hold first meeting of new year

President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will be holding their first meeting for the new year on Wednesday morning, ahead of the Geneva talks on Cyprus to begin next week.

The leaders will be meeting one more time, on January 7th, before departing for Geneva. In the meantime, the chief negotiators of the two sides Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami, are meeting almost daily. Yesterday they discussed the chapters of territory, property, and the EU. A new meeting has been set for Thursday.

Tomorrow, the National Council, will convene to discuss the latest developments.

UNSG Envoy Espen Barth Eide will be travelling to Athens today for contacts and tomorrow he is set to hold meetings in Ankara. The Greek FM will be meeting with the new UNSG on Friday.

Anastasiades and Akinci have decided that the UN-sponsored talks will continue in Geneva, Switzerland. Between January 9-11 the two sides will discuss the remaining issues of the Cyprus problem and present maps concerning territorial adjustments, while on January 12 a conference on Cyprus will be convened with the participation of the guarantor powers as well as other relevant parties as needed.
