Man arrested for contraband cigarettes, assault

A 29-year-old man, who had been wanted by police, was arrested on Wednesday after he was caught speeding and officers found what appeared to be contraband cigarettes in his car.

Police stopped the man’s car on the Larnaca to Limassol motorway because he was travelling at a speed of 144 km/h. The limit is 100 km/h.

The man could not explain the origin of 302 cartons of cigarettes, which were found in the vehicle.

A check revealed that an arrest warrant for common assault had been issued against him by Paphos police.

The suspect’s car and the cigarettes were seized by customs officers and the man was arrested.
