Anastasiades explains his proposal to Mogherini

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has taken the toughest stance against Turkey

President Nicos Anastasiades has explained his proposal aiming at returning to Geneva for peace talks that would create the preconditions for a political settlement to the EU High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

Anastasiades met Mogherin on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum being held in Jordan.

He submitted the proposal earlier this week during a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Moustafa Akinci in the framework of UN-led negotiations on the Cyprus problem. On Wednesday Anastasiades said the Greek Cypriot side had submitted a concrete, creative proposal that could really create the preconditions for a Cyprus settlement.

He also said that if his proposal were to be accepted by the Turkish Cypriot leader, then a solution could be reached before the presidential elections expected to be held in February 2018. The President said that he would explain his proposal to the people on Monday.
