Human chain across the buffer zone

THE ‘Unify Cyprus Now’ organisation plans to form a human chain across the buffer zone near the Ledra street crossing point, on Saturday at 11 am, in a symbolic act to show the solidarity of the people in demanding reunification. The aim is to form a human chain across the buffer zone to link the two sides of the divide beyond the two check points. Along the line there will singers, poets, musicians and other performing artists.

“We demand a solution, we demand peace, we demand a reunified island, we will not give up, we will not rest,” the organisers said in an announcement.

Meanwhile, on Friday evening a few hundred supporters of the group met as they have done every evening for a week at the end of Ledra street, this time to express their disappointment in the peace process after the latest impasse of the talks between the two leaders was announced.

“I am so disappointed, here we are again,” one of them said. However, the group is defiant. “Unless we take things in our own hands, nothing is going to happen,” was another comment. “We will continue to meet every day to demand that our leaders take action.”

“We are the children of generations who have never seen peace in this country. We are the parents of children entitled to better days, we are Cypriots who believe that the present situation is a shame,” they said.
