Two arrested following sea sports accident (Updated)

Two men were arrested and remanded for three days after a parasailing accident which left two tourists injured, one of them seriously, in the sea off Paphos on Monday.

The accident happened at around 12.45pm when two British tourists, a 35-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman who had rented a boat to go parasailing, were struck by a metal bar, which had broken off the boat.

The man was rushed to Nicosia general hospital in critical condition after he suffered a brain haemorrhage and was diagnosed with a severe neck injury, jaw and rib fractures.

The 25-year-old woman has a fractured nose and cheek injury. Her condition was not life threatening and she was admitted to Paphos general hospital mainly as a precaution.

The two arrested men are the 49-year-old owner of the water sports rental which the tourists used and a 34-year-old employee who operated the boat.

According to preliminary investigations the boat was licensed.

Police are checking in how far the relevant safety rules were observed.
