Green Party has not decided who to back in presidential elections

Green Party leader Giorgos Perdikis

The Green party has not formally decided who it will back in the 2018 presidential elections and people are wrong to believe it is a given that the party will back Diko leader Nicolas Papadopoulos, it said on Wednesday.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Green Party leader Giorgos Perdikis said a decision would be made on June 18 when party members convene to collectively choose who they will back.

“We are not going to take a decision in the absence of our members. We will hear what they have to say first.”

Perdikis conceded there was a lack of interest from within the party, probably stemming from the developments surrounding Cyprus talks and the Geneva conference set to take place on June 28, he said.

Any impressions that the Green Party has already concluded they will be backing Papadopoulos are mistaken and it is not a given, Perdikis told CNA.

At least two thirds of the party will have to be present for a decision to be made, he specified.
