Public sector workers up 4% in Q1, Cystat says

The number of workers in the wider public sector rose 4 per cent to 66,124 in the first three months of the year compared to the respective period of 2016, the statistical service said.

The increase in January to March was mainly on a 5 per cent annual rise in the number of staffers working for the central government to 55,942 compared to the first three-month period of 2016, in which Cyprus completed its adjustment programme during which it applied general hiring freeze, Cystat said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.

The number of workers in the local administration dropped 1.5 per cent to 4,204 in the first three months of 2017 compared to the previous year, while that in government-controlled corporations fell 0.1 per cent to 5,978, Cystat said.
