THE EU has increased its funds for providing children with fruit and vegetable in schools from €380,000 to €790,000, agriculture minister Nicos Kouyialis said on Friday.
Speaking at a workshop the minister said that from the school year 2017/2018 the promotion scheme will be combined with providing milk for schools.
Kouyialis said the plan is crucial as young people don’t consume enough fruit and vegetables while it will also benefit the farmers who grow them.
“The ambition of this initiative is to tackle the reduced consumption of these products and bad nutrition in a more effective way, reinforcing the fight against obesity,” he said.
Consumption of fruit and vegetables is lower than recommended nearly everywhere in Europe and the plan has been implemented in almost all EU member states in an attempt by Europe to invest in its young people, he said.
