Residents of Mesogi, in Paphos, went to the ballots on Sunday to elect their new community leader, because the incumbent, Georgios Christou,73, passed away last month.

Paphos district officer, Mary Lambrou, said the election went smoothly. The candidates that run as independents are Nicolas Savva Aresti, Christakis Nicolaou and Georgios Papagregoriou. There are 968 registered voters, Lambrou said, of which 50 are nationals of other EU-member states.

The ballots opened at 7am and will close at 6pm, with a one-hour break at noon.
