Actor and director Nicos Siafkalis

Eighty-three-year-old actor and director Nicos Siafkalis, whose body was found on Tuesday morning on a beach in Polis Chrysochous, died of a heart attack, it was announced on Wednesday.

The post-mortem on Siafkalis’ body was carried out by state pathologist Eleni Antoniou.

A search and rescue operation was launched on Sunday evening to locate the 83-year-old, who was reported by his son as missing after hours of not being able to reach him, after Siafkalis had gone fishing in the morning.

His body was finally located by a tourist on Tuesday morning on a beach in Polis Chrysochous, 10 to 15 kilometres from where his car was found.

The ministry of education announced on Tuesday that the upcoming International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama will be held in his memory. The ministry also said his funeral will be covered by state funds.

Most of Siafkalis’ life was devoted to the reorganisation of the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute.
