AEK and AEL get off to flying Europa League starts

AEK and AEL made giants strides towards the second round of the Europa League with big wins in their opening round first leg fixtures against Gibraltar pair Lincoln Red Imps and St Joseph’s respectively.

AEK Larnaca practically booked their place in the next round with a 5-0 rout of Lincoln Red Imps. Florian Taulemesse got things going with a near post header, before Joan Tomas netted a brace early in the second half.

The Spaniard then returned the favour to Florian for his second, before Ivan Trickovski’s penalty wrapped up a good night’s work at the AEK Arena.

AEL also have one foot in the second round as they cruised to a 4-0 away victory away at St Joseph’s. Any pre-game nerves were quickly settled with an early opener from Mikel Arruabarrena.

They then doubled their lead early in the second period through Aly Savane, before a strike from Kevin Pierre Lafrance just after the hour mark made it 3-0. The same player then got his second to put the tie beyond any reasonable doubt.

The reverse fixtures take place next Thursday, with AEK travelling to the rock of Gibraltar, while AEL host St Joseph’s in Cyprus.
